An Explanation of Your Inner Parts

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a unique approach to psychotherapy that views the human mind as a complex system of interconnected parts.

  • Imagine your mind as a family: This "family" consists of different sub-personalities, each with its own unique role and perspective.

    • Some parts might be protective and try to shield you from pain (like an overprotective parent).

    • Others might be wounded and carry emotional burdens (like a scared child).

    • And there's a core Self, which is believed to be inherently wise, compassionate, and resourceful.

  • The goal of IFS is to:

    • Identify and understand these different parts: What are their roles? What are their needs? What are their fears?

    • Heal the wounded parts: By creating a safe and supportive environment, the therapist helps clients connect with and understand the pain of their wounded parts.

    • Empower the Self: The ultimate goal is to help clients access their core Self, which can then guide them towards healing and growth.

Key Concepts:

  • Parts: These are the different sub-personalities within your mind.

  • Self: The core of your being, which is inherently wise, compassionate, and resourceful.

  • Polarization: When parts are in conflict with each other, creating inner turmoil.

  • Unburdening: Helping wounded parts release their pain and find healing.

IFS therapy can be helpful for a variety of issues, including:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma

  • Relationship problems

  • Addiction
